Sustaining San Francisco
The city of San Francisco is a leader in the area of sustainability, representing the
next wave of innovation. It is only fitting that the Academy of Art University add their voice to
the sustainability mix through design-thinking and creativity.
This spring, select Academy alumni will mentor MFA students as they conceive projects around
the theme of sustainability relevant to the greater San Francisco community. Students will be
challenged to look beyond the obvious; to broadly address the theme of sustainability in new and
innovative ways. At the end of the semester, the projects will be featured in an exhibition
with a goal of executing the most compelling and manageable solutions.
The alumni support component has been developed to help these MFA students realize their
ideas. Alumni have the ability to bring fresh perspective to the students’ work, to help them shape
the project for real world execution. This semester, the participating departments include
Fashion, Graphic Design, Industrial Design and Photography. Computer Arts New Media students are
also contributing to the Design Ignites Change website. The program will continue in future
semesters, expanding to all departments.
